Low status of the girl child is the result of deeply ingrained value systems based on son preference. In many parts of India, families not wanting daughters continue to practice pre-natal sex selection. While communication to address the burning issue of sex selection is a must, it needs to be undertaken with care and foresight. Firstly, it should not compromise on a woman’s right to access safe and legal abortion. Secondly, it should not be of a nature that adds to the apathy about sex selection. Experts believe that gruesome or gory visuals do not necessarily shock people into changing their mindset about sex selection. Instead, such negative imagery runs the risk of making people instinctively go into the 'switch-off mode'.

While orienting students of art colleges on the Art for Social Change Awards, they were encouraged to use warmth, joy, optimism and hope as hues for their paintings. It is gratifying to note that over 95% of the 474 paintings received are glowing examples of such positive messaging. Most importantly, it reiterates the fact that strong and effective communication to address sex selection and gender discrimination works!
